Purgatori: Goddess Rising

Writer: Marc Andreyko

Artist: Mike Deodato, Jr.

“I have never been defiled by man. Let alone impregnated with his seed!”

One of the things that have always defined Purgatori was her rise to power. Everything she has done has been to gain power, no matter the price. This is a common theme in her stories and something that seems to follow her wherever she goes. This is a perfect arc to showcase her ascension, properly titled “Goddess Rising.”SCAN0533 The art by Mike Deodato, Jr. is stunning and appropriate in regards to portraying the Goddesses new image.

The arc begins in July 99′ in the aftermath of the 7-issue Purgatori Monthly series. Purgatori is once again working with Satrina, this time they take down the vatican vampires and steal their treasures. Through visions summoned by blood alchemy, Purgatori see’s into her future, which reveals that Satrina wishes to kill her. Satrina summons a monster to do this but he refuses to be controlled and attempts to harm her, in fear Satrina runs into Purgatori’s arms only to have her heart ripped out by the Blood Goddess. The creatures reveals himself to be Gorge, Purgatori’s blood son. He claims to help her seek knowledge in her quest for ascension. The Goddess now believes Rath was working with Satrina all along and attacks. She rips out Rubicante’s, Rath’s brother, spine. It is revealed that Rath has not betrayed Purgatori but wants to see her ascension into Godhood. The Goddess visits a world with the finest warriors from across the universe and turns them into her blood warriors willingly. They go after Asgard first and defeat all the Asgardians, she now wields the Odin power as her own. Purgatori keeps one of the valkyries, Lady Death’s half sister Vulvania, as her concubine and warrior. Finally Gorge betrays her in an attempt to steal her power but she bests him with ease and heads off with her warrior army.

Purgatori Monthly

“I can halt the coursing blood within an enemy’s veins! Blind him by pooling his fluid in his eyes! Make her spurt a cloud of vital life! Or summon his exploding heart into my hands! Vengeance and ascension are not mutually exclusive!”

This 7 issue monthly series that began in October 98′ is written by David Quinn with stunning art by Al Rio. This series picks with Purgatori inSCAN0199 New York where she finds a plethora of fallen angels, some allies and others enemy’s. Through her allies, The Fallen, she finds out about her prophecy of ascension. Upon returning back to business in the guise of Sakkara she encounters her ex-paramour, Satrina. They become lovers once more but Satrina betrays her by hiring a vampire assassin named Karmilla to kill her. Karmilla is only going after someone as threatening as Purgatori because her children have been abducted and she seeks to save them by completing Satrina’s task. Purgatori defeats SCAN0299Karmilla and sends her to hell. Next she seeks out Jade and in her quest runs into Dracula who promises to help Purgatori attain the Chalice of Regeneration from Jade. They complete their quest but Dracula betrays Purgatori and tries to steal the Chalice for himself. Dracula hopes to win the war among the vampire clans and rule all. Purgatori defeats Dracula and learns that he is already dying, his blood has been poisoned by the modern vampire’s experiment to kill him. Dracula hopes to take Purgatori down with him but she bests him and rips out his heart and fangs. By wearing his fangs on a necklace she now controls his vampiric allies and all his earthly powers.

Guide to Ashcans – Purgatori Edition

Ashcans are typically used for copyright purposes. Companies use them to secure titles, characters, and concepts so that no one else uses them. Comic ashcans typically showcase work in progress issues, which often come in the form of black and white pages on different quality paper. They are usually produced in fewer quantities and therefore they can become quite the collectible. CHAOS! used them very frequently in order to give fans a taste of what was coming. These were often produced in the forms of Standard and Premium editions, the latter being the rarer.

Being that I collect all things Purgatori, these collectibles are something I could not pass up. Beyond just collecting these, they serve a purpose that holds similar to when writers release scripts (a connection to the writing and character). Some ashcans just display WIP pictures but others also include things like preliminary sketches and actual pages from scripts. They are quite the collectible to anyone who is a fan of a character and very much worth investing in. Now this does not mean you should pay crazy money for these things, often you will find them for a decent price if you just look hard enough. If you ever need help searching for something Purgatori related, just let me know and I can help you in your journey. Finding rare issues, including ashcans, has become a skill of mine.

Below are the Purgatori ashcans that I have been able to find. For the most part, this should be all of them but surprises do happen. 🙂

Now I want to showcase some of the interiors I have picked out from various ashcans. I choose a variety of different images that give you a conclusive idea of what to expect if you decide to purchase an ashcan (just remember that not all ashcans are the same and some just include WIP panels).

I hope you enjoyed this mass post about ashcans! As a collector, they are well worth the purchase – also the limited quantities make them all the more desirable!

Here is an eBay link to some Purgatori ashcans available.

Cover/Interior Artists include Al Rio, Romano Molenaar, Fabiano Neves, & Adriano Batista.

Brian Pulido’s Purgatori Vampire Goddess Statute

IMG_2724

To date, the most alluring of Purgatori’s statues, though there are many, is Brian Pulido’s cold cast resin Vampire Goddess by Sam Greenwell. She is simply to die for in person, my favorite version is when her wings are displayed up. There is such beauty in the magnitude of her wings. Her face portrays confidence and pose, and the statute itself radiates confidence and a carefree take no prisoners attitude. I simply love having her by my bed, waking up to her presence is all I ask from the Goddess. This statute is 1/6 in scale and was released back in 2000 by the Eternal Toys line [Just a heads up, Dynamite is developing a Toy line and is planning for Eternal Toys to have a come back]. If you are in the market for this figure here is a fair warning, people are selling it for a lot of money right now. I would just keep a look out until a decently priced one comes along. Luckily I got mine for around $99 on ebay, unfortunately people try to sell it between $600-$800.

“Purgatori, the vampire Goddess, is immortalized for eternity in this magnificent cold cast resin sculpture, sculpted by Sam Greenwell. Alluring, yet deadly, Purgatori stands seductively over twenty inches tall atop an Egyptian themed base. This high quality collector’s piece comes with two sets of wings – one set with wings up in defiance and one set with her wings down and wrapped around her breathtaking form. The Purgatori sculpture is strictly limited to 4,000. Limited Edition sculptures and 300 Ruby Sapphire Artist’s Proof Edition sculptures signed by Brian Pulido and Sam Greenwell.”

Pharaoh Ernie vs. Purgatori

Evil Ernie: Baddest Battles (That Never Happened) (January 1997) is an issue filled with pictures of fights between Ernie and other CHAOS! characters that never happened – but would of been super awesome! Purgatori is in one of these illustrations, which features her about to duel a Pharaoh version of Evil Ernie. This issue is definatley worth checking out, there are some badass fights that I would of loved to see happen. Some of these include depictions of Ernie vs. Lucifer, Demon Ernie vs. Lady Demon, Evil Ernie vs. Lady Death, etc.

Pharaoh Ernie vs. Purgatori is illustrated by Justiniano and colored by Brett Smith. The standard cover (pictured above) is also done by Justiniano and Brett Smith.

CHAOS! Quarterly #1 – Hell on Earth

After the events of Lady Death: Between Heaven and Hell is CHAOS! Quarterly #1 (October 1995). Purgatori, amongst three other characters, is included in her own short that explains what happens after Lady Demon banishes her through the Nexus.

The Nexus opens up in San Francisco, Purgatori screams out in displeasure as she falls. She has not been back to Earth in 3000 years, then she was just a common vampire. She is no longer familiar with the surroundings and has made another disturbing discovery – she feels a hunger that has not been present for some time.

A few blocks away, The Faithless One, a serial murderer of vampires, is chasing down a vampire. He finally pins the vampire down and mercilessly shoves his hand under the dead man’s facial skin, blood gushes.

Purgatori finds a newspaper and realizes that it is 1995. She is kneeling on the ground in front of a club called “Torture Garden”, those who pass her notice that she is not feeling well. Purgatori goes into the club in search of blood, she immediately is pleased with what she see’s. She also realizes that, even though she has fallen from grace, she still has rudimentary powers – such as the power of persuasion.

Purgatori, with her powers of persuasion, makes a woman, Siouxsie, believe that she wants to be ravaged. Siouxsie agrees and they leave together. The other women in the club are jealous, Siouxsie does not just leave with anybody. Purgatori drinks the girl’s blood in an alley, she is upset that she is a slave to blood once again. It is also upsetting to learn that mortal blood is still too thin, she realizes that she needs an ancient vampire to feed on.

The Faithless One picks up on Purgatori’s scent, the smell of an ancient vampire. He craves to learn the truth about God, he hopes that this ancient will know.

Purgatori leaves the alley, with Siouxsie’s coat on, and begins walking down a street. She smells disease and decay. The air is poison to her and her senses become clouded and blurry. It dawns on her that she must find refuge from the coming light. Suddenly a man darts passed her, cutting the front of her coat, he is demanding the truth. Purgatori barely sensed him approach and is upset that he has cut her. He keeps questioning her but he is so confusing that she thinks he speaks in riddles. He asks if there is a god, if the fallen angels left heaven, and whether the fallen angels coupled with man to produce monsters such as them. Finally Purgatori has The Faithless One pinned down on the floor. He begs her for the truth while his wrists spurt out blood.

He claims that he suffers like this every night in sympathy of Christ’s sacrifice. He believes he is suffering in vain because he has no faith. Purgatori understands what he is asking, at this point he is crying. She asks him whether he wants to know about God and Heaven, he says “Yes!”, she slits open his throat with her nail and says “Then don’t ask me!.” Purgatori throws his body and tells him to ask the devil and that she will see him in hell. She laughs as she flies away into the night.

The next panel flashes to Africa where a mysterious women is standing with two white tigers. She cannot believe her eyes, within the flames she see’s a vision of Purgatori. This women believes that Purgatori must pay for her sins, and decides it is time to gather the Coven of Ancients.

Lady Death vs. Purgatori – Wizard Ace Edition – CHAOS!

The Lady Death vs. Purgatori Wizard #17 ACE Edition (1997) should not be confused as a variant cover for the latter Lady Death vs. Purgatori (1999) issue. The Wizard edition offers a sneak peek of events that had previously happened in Evil Ernie: Revenge #1-4. Oddly enough, the inside of the issue claims to include issues from Revenge and Lady Death #3. This may have been where the misconception began, in which people believe Lady Death #3 to be Purgatori’s first appearance, which is a false claim (Refer back to my blog post “The Fake First Appearance“).

I really love how you can see through the front cover. Covers like these are very crafty, I find pleasure in seeing Hughes’s Lady Death art and then finding Balent’s Purgatori on the inside. It is a unique blend of these two artists. Defiantly one worth having, if not for the cover, then especially if you are in the mood to just read Purgatori’s parts of Ernie’s Revenge series.

Side Note ~ Looking through these CHAOS! issues really makes me wish Lady Death was not separated from the universe. (Dynamite now owns the rights to all the CHAOS! characters, except Lady Death. Brian Pulido still owns the rights to the Queen of All that is Dead and Dying).

Between Heaven and Hell Pt. 2 – The Fall of Purgatori

Lady Death: Between Heaven and Hell #3 (May 1995)

Lady Death is forcing the truth out of Purgatori. She further reveals that she detests humanity and that she sacrificed thousands just to appeal to Lucifer. Purgatori explains how it was his blood she wanted – the blood of The Darkest God. That he banished her through the Nexus to Necropolis, which was home to a sect of Roman deities. Here she drank the blood of Gods for thousands of years, but she grew bored of the blood of demi-gods. She had discovered she was trapped, there was no way to travel through the Nexus, a possible punishment by Lucifer.

Eons later, there was a disturbance within the Nexus, Purgatori and her faithful pet, Chimera, seized the opportunity. Here was Lady Death’s mother, Marion, inches away from Heaven’s Gate, but Purgatori denied her access. Chimera grabbed hold of her and Purgatori seized her thoughts, here she learned the most intimate things about Lady Death.

This is the point where Purgatori began to desire Death’s power. Unfortunately the Nexus required balance, so Purgatori had to be patient, and thus waited 400 years. Each day she would visit Marion to learn more and to check on the Nexus.

One day Fallen Angels arrived, returning from the abyss, seeking sovereignty over everything – this “signaled the beginning of the Judgement Era.” Purgatori’s kingdom was the first to fall, they wanted to eliminate her from the competition. Purgatori risked her existence and used Marion’s soul as her bridge back to hell. The plan was to become empowered and return to fall the countless Fallen Angels one by one.

Lady Death is enraged to learn that her mother’s soul has never known eternal rest, she is about to attack Purgatori when Lucifer breaks through the ground and rises in front of them, knocking them off balance.

Lady Death goes to attack Lucifer but her sword disappears, she rushes at him again but he freezes her in the air. Purgatori is begging to be spared in the background when Lucifer calls on his demons. Lucifer explains that by revealing his absence, she has forced his hand, and that he will deal with her later. Two demons emerge from the ground and begin to take her away, she pleads her him to take pity.

Lucifer is now alone with Lady Death, he grabs her throat and holds her in the air. He is showing her the obliteration of the Endless Graveyard. In seconds, Hell has returned and Lucifer demands that Lady Death submit to him, she resists but nonetheless is forced to kneel before him.

Lucifer begins to tell his story, how he was the highest official in Heaven, and how his “foolish pride” led to his fall. His punishment was banishment from Heaven, and many angels had followed him. He refers to them as “Fallen Angels” and “Broken Angels.” They traveled through the Nexus to Earth, the angels dispersing wherever they pleased. The fallen angels, lust filling their hearts, saw that the daughters of man were fair. They coupled with many humans but the unions were always damned, the women would give birth to monstrosities. Thus came the birth of evil, the perversions that came to be the offspring – the monsters of today.

Lucifer reveals that he chose Lady Death because her father was the 666th generation of fallen angels and her mother had such a pure bloodline that it reached Heaven. It should be noted that Lucifer cannot create but only taint what God has created. He taunts Lady Death with the fact that she took his challenge “As long as the living walk the earth…you will never…ever return home.” and believed it to be her own actions. She was merely doing his work for him, she chose the darkness instead of the light, because of this Lucifer wins. The bodies of Niccolo, Father Orbec, and Cremator carry Lady Death to a building marked “All Hope Abandon.” Her father is there, proclaiming how proud he is that she will take Lucifer by her side. Her mother is coxing her to give into darkness. Lady Death is screaming in resistance.

“Deep within the nightmare city of Dis” is Purgatori chained in a dungeon. Lucifer has arrived and voices his displeasure of her actions. Purgatori disclosures that Lucifer’s presence is punishment enough, in anger he raises his hand toward her and yells “Be still your tongue. Wench!!.” It is not clear what happens, but it is implied that he has caused her harm as her screams can be heard through the dungeon doors.

Lady Death is placed into a coffin, demons posing as her family and friends laugh at her. She is tired and alone, she wishes to surrender. She believes now that it is her curse and destiny to fall into darkness, to surrender. Later Lucifer comes to ask what path she has chosen, she has decided to become his. Lady Death is now Lady Demon and Lucifer welcomes her to the family.

Lady Death: Between Heaven and Hell #4 (June 1995)

Lady Demon is about to fight with Purgatori, their time of reckoning is near. Lady Demon still has Death’s memories and is filled with anger about Marion. Purgatori states that she’d rather die before she tells her where she has imprisoned the soul of her mother.

As punishment for not revealing the location, Lady Demon decides that death is too kind a punishment. She prefers her to “suffer for the rest” of her “miserable existence!” Lady Demon decides to send her back to earth among mortals, the place Purgatori detests most. In conjunction she takes away Purgatori’s godlike powers, it is then that she is thrown into the Nexus.

Purgatori, upon seeing her destination, is horrified and begs whatever forces at play to stop this.

In this story arc Purgatori is bested by Lady Death and her alter ego Lady Demon. She has lost her godlike powers and is banished back to the place that she detests most. Unfortunately that makes Purgatori the loser of this round.

Between Heaven and Hell – Purgatori Exposed

Following of the events of Evil Ernie: Revenge is the 4 issue series, Lady Death: Between Heaven and Hell.

Lady Death: Between Heaven and Hell #1 (March 1995) – It is 3361 years ago and Purgatori is summoning Lucifer because she is tired of thin mortal blood. She is controlling peasants, like puppets, to madly dance around a fire. When Lucifer appears, Purgatori gives herself to him, he is intrigued by the darkness in her blood and her legacy of brutality. Lucifer promises her Hell, and burns alive all her sacrifices.

Purgatori is taken to the city of Dis in Lucifer’s Kingdom. He has her prepared and sent to his bed chamber where she promises fulfillment of his desires. When he is close enough she bites into his neck, sucking on his blood. Lucifer is immediately insulted, calls her a “wench” and throws her off, but she does not falter and attempts to try again. His blood is everything she dreamed it would be, and so she leeches onto his neck once again. He pulls her off and she has a realization, the turmoil from his resistance makes his blood more powerful and intoxicating, Purgatori craves more of this ecstasy she is feeling. Lucifer is contemplating what to do with her, but he does not want her dead because she is the offspring of Fallen Angels. Thus, he banishes her into The Nexus of All Things to Necropolis where she will be free to pursue her “dark destiny.” He admires her spirit, beauty, and bids farewell to his beloved Purgatori. Purgatori screams “Mmorrrreeee” as she falls into the Nexus.

The next time we see Purgatori it is the present. She is rejoicing that she has “prepared” and “simmered” Lady Death to the point where Death is having an identity crisis. Purgatori cannot wait to drink from the Goddess whose blood is in turmoil. Her plan is revealed for the first time, she wishes to drain the Goddess and use her new-found power to liberate Lucifer’s Soul from within her.  Afterwards, she hopes to take Lucifer’s power for her own. At this moment, Lady Death is starting to believe the hallucinations about her past, Purgatori is relishing at how easy this all has been. For a moment, she admires Lady Death’s tragic life, which she finds similar to her own, but she quickly brushes that thought away.

Death’s blood is now boiling and Purgatori decides that she needs a final tipping point to send her over the edge. Death sees a vision, in which she professes, that killing her own mother was her “most profound pleasure.” Lady Death quickly realizes she is being manipulated and Purgatori thinks that she is “too close to lose her now.” Purgatori realizes she was wrong in her haste but gains an advantage when she realizes Marion, Death’s mother, is the key. She wraps the astral image of Marion around her and speaks to the Goddess. As the mother, she claims that the demoness captured and used her to travel to this realm, then she pulls out a doll from Hope’s childhood. Death quickly goes to embrace her mother, and it ends with Purgatori embracing the Goddess claiming that “…Everything will be alright.”

Lady Death: Between Heaven and Hell #2 (April 1995) – Lady Death quickly realizes that Purgatori is an imposter, claiming to have watched her mother’s spirit pass through the Nexus of All Things to Heaven’s Gate eons ago. Purgatori realizes that her plan was not as clever as she thought, she has failed to drive Lady Death to the brink of sanity, upon success she hoped that Death’s blood would boil with uncertainty. Purgatori disappears to recalculate her plan, Death wonders if she has just met the enemy that has plagued her of late.

“Some time ago, on the edges of the Endless Graveyard”, Purgatori senses an ally of Lady Death’s forgotten, abandoned, left for dead, and in despair. She digs into the ground and finds Cremator, who still harbors no malice toward Death. In the present, Cremator expresses his anger toward Death as he completes Purgatori’s sword which is “forged in hate and unholy hellfire.” Purgatori feels accomplished that the spell on her slave has worked so well.

Purgatori is hoping to get Lady Death’s powers’ soon, a war is coming, the judgement era for Fallen Angels. She sends Cremator out to pay Death a visit, he attacks her in bed and she fights back, thinking him another manipulation. Lady Death hits Cremator so hard with her powers that he becomes disillusioned and reveals that “Purgatori…Lucifer’s Beloved!” has been controlling him. Suddenly, Purgatori impales Cremator as he warns Death to beware of the sword.

Purgatori has arrived on a horse with horns lining his neck, a sword it sticking out straight from her hand, various blades lining the saddle. Once again, Purgatori thinks sweetly about the Goddess, she has come to adore her and wants her more than ever, but she brushes away those thoughts.

Purgatori subdues Lady Death with a lasso of blood and drags her body through the dirt. Death’s nameless wolves bite through the lasso and she hurries onto her steed Vassago.

They clash swords, in an attempt to anger the Goddess, Purgatori takes credit for how she has violated Lady Death’s mind with fear and how Death is now her submissive. Death vows that for Purgatori’s insolence – a slow and painful death.

Purgatori has her where she wants her but then Lady Death pulls away. The blood Goddess beckons her to attack, they rush at each other, and Purgatori blinds Death with a blood veil.

Purgatori lunges at the Goddess and listens to Death mistakenly believe that she has come to rescue Lucifer. As Purgatori sits atop of Death she tells her that she does not appreciate her wearing her wedding dress. She then uses blood bonds to keep Lady Death’s wrists above her head. Purgatori laughs at the notion that she has come to save her “beloved” and then remarks that the Goddess is more to her liking. She bites into Death’s neck and enjoys the sweet taste, she admits that she just wants Lucifer’s blood and soul.

Purgatori also mentions that there is a coming struggle for dominance among the Fallen Angels. She explains that the sword was crafted to liberate Lucifer’s soul from within and that Death’s blood will serve as the perfect conduit. As she plunges the sword into Lady Death’s body she reveals, in her thoughts, that she did in fact capture Death’s mother on her way to Heaven’s Gate, in which she stole her thoughts and learned of her story.

Suddenly the panel flashes to blue and Purgatori screams out “No!” and babbles about how this is unholy as she realizes Lucifer’s soul is not within the Goddess. Lady Death screams out believing this to be a further manipulation, yet she considers the possibility that this is true. Purgatori keeps to her realization and so Death drags her to the River Styx where she will be forced to tell the truth.

Purgatori admits that Lucifer’s soul was never inside of Lady Death.
